We
plant each field in an east - west direction on 7 1/2 to 10"
drill spacings, allowing us to take advantage of the sunlight and
prevailing Texas winds in order to reduce disease pressures and promote
growth. |
|
| |
|
Rouging
lanes are every 24 feet on center - these lanes allow the experienced
team of roguers to inspect the fields closely and clear them of any
off type plants.
|
|
| |
|
Roguers
begin and end their lanes by coding them with a colored ribbon. This
management practice allows us to insure the rice in the plot has been
checked and the ribbon serves to identify the roguer responsible for
the lane.

|
All
off type plants are cut, put in a bucket and carried out of the field.

During
the harvest season, Garrett Farms operates six combines. When the
machines leave a field of one variety and before they move to harvest
another variety, the machines are brought into the shop for thorough
cleaning. Each combine takes two days to be stripped and cleaned. |

|
Air
blowers and picks are used in the bins to prevent contamination of
seeds in the bins.
|
|
| |
|
All
bins use natural air for drying the seed. Heat is used only when adverse
weather conditions prevent us from using natural air. This provides
farmers a larger, more uniform seed with excellent seedling vigor.
